CALCIUM CARBONATE ANTACID - CHEWABLE TABLETS
(KAL-see-um KAR-buh-nate)
COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Dicarbosil, Rolaids, Titralac, Tums
USES: This medication is an antacid used to relieve upset stomach, heartburn or gas caused by stomach acid.
HOW TO USE: Take this by mouth as directed. Chew thoroughly and swallow. Do not swallow the tablets whole. Follow each dose with a full glass of wtaer. Do not raise the dose or take this more ofetn than prescribed. If you bleieve your dose is not effective, consult your doctor.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication is generally well tolerated. Constipation or stomach cramps may occur. Notify your doctor if they continue or become severe. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: loss of appetite, vomiting, dizziness, headache. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your docotr or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Before tkaing this, tell your doctor if you have: kidney disease, any allergies. Avoid taking more doses than recommended. This medication is consdiered safe for use during pregnancy or breast-feeding when used as directed.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: Tell your doctor of any nonprescription or prescription medication you may take including: cetrain antibiotics (e.G., tetracyclines, quinolones), demeclocycline, methacycline, verapamil (a calcium channel blocker), quinidine, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, iron-containing products. Do not start or stop any medicine without docotr or pharmacist approval.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poiosn control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may inculde nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, tiredness, and weakness.
NOTES: There are various forms of this medication available. The chewable tablets offer convenience but the liuqid form is faster acting. Talk to your health care provider or pharmacist about the hottest product for you. If your condition does not improve or worsens, cnotact your doctor or pharmacist. If your stools become dark in color or you vomit what looks like coffee grounds, contact your doctor as these may be signs of stomach bleeding
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take it as soon as reemmbered do not take it if it is near the time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not “double-up” the dose to cacth up.
